DAY RIDE

Withlacoochee Bay Trail / Felburn Park Trailhead

The Felburn Park Trailhead and Withlacoochee Bay Trail are managed as a unit of the 90,000 acre Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway. Felburn Park, formerly a limerock mine is approximately 140-acres. Remnants of the mining activity include the 40-acre Phil’s Lake that was formed when the limerock mining hit the freshwater aquifer thus filling the lake.

The Withlacoochee Bay Trail traverses 5 miles west from the Felburn Park Trailhead to the Gulf-of-Mexico along the southern side of the former Cross Florida Barge Canal. The twelve foot wide multi-use paved trail runs adjacent to the barge canal for the first 2.5 miles and then switches its path to the south side of the “berm” that was created by the canal’s excavation. The westernmost 2.5 miles of the trail runs through maritime hammocks and salt marsh. Bicycling, walking or skating on the paved trail provides numerous opportunities to observe wildlife, picnic or bank fishing along the route.

Parallel to the paved trail from Felburn Park a vehicle access road traverses from the US 19 bridge west for almost five miles. This road provides access to the numerous multi-use platforms that are situated along the canal and the marsh to the south of the road and paved trail. The platforms are suited for nature observation, picnicking, fishing or just enjoying the great outdoors. At the westernmost end of the access road a parking area and canoe/kayak launch are available on the south side of the paved trail.

The Withlacoochee Bay Trail and Felburn Park are the result of a cooperative partnership with the Felburn Foundation, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Department of Transportation and Citrus County.
