Arizona: Houston Mesa Horse Camp
Posted on Sunday, May 01 @ 17:06:31 MST by jhallamek

Horse Camping & Trails
  • Location: approx. 2 miles North of Hwy 260 Intersection in Payson, AZ on 199 Houston Mesa Road

  • This camp is listed as one of Arizona's premier horse camps.

The Shoofly loop (4.0 miles) begins 1.34 miles to the east of the horse camp and passes near the Shoofly Indian ruins. On the south side of the Shoofly loop is a 1 mile connector trail to the Houston loop (3.77 miles).

The trails are not clearly marked and I have seen several people confused as to how to get back to the camp.

The Recreation site consists of two sections, RV and tent on the west side of FS199 and horse camping to the east. (both with spurs and pull-through).

The horse side toilets are pit type and well maintained. Water is strategically placed throughout the camp.

There is a shower in the RV section. The trails are easy but it does get a little warm from spring to fall so be sure to bring drinking water.
