Directions: From Wabash, south on IN 15, east on IN 124, north on IN 105 to Lost Bridge recreation sites.
Salamonie Lake: was derived from
the Indian word "O-sah-mo-nee" which means "yellow paint." The Indians
made yellow dye and paint from the bloodroot that grew abundantly along
the banks of the stream.
The Indiana Department of Natural
Resources manages all the recreation areas at the lake, except for the
Observation Mound and Tailwater Areas.
There are five main recreation areas at the lake which offer a wide variety of facilities and activities:
Salamonie River State Forest adjoins the reservoir property and has the
following facilities: primative and horse camping, trails, a lake
(Hominy Ridge) with a boat ramp, a historic shelter house, playground,
Bridge West - modern, primative and horse camping, boat ramp, marina,
beach, youth campground, nature center, fish cleaning station,
accessible fishing pier, playgrounds, wildlife viewing areas, picnic
areas, trails and shelterhouse.
- Lost Bridge East - boat ramp, trails, picnic areas, shelterhouse.
- Mt. Etna - boat ramp, shelter house, trails.
- Dora/New Holland - boat ramp, shelterhouse, trails.
- Mt. Hope - boat ramp
(19 miles) Trailheads are located at the Horseman’s Campgrounds at Lost
Bridge West SRA and the Salamonie River State Forest. The trail
connects the two campgrounds. No horse rentals are available on the
