Visitors to this ranger district can enjoy panoramic views from the sandstone bluffs of the Longleaf Vista Recreation Area; feel the cool currents, white sandy beaches, and rocky rapids at Kisatchie Bayou Recreation Area; experience a wilderness challenge in the nationally designated Kisatchie Hills Wilderness; drive leisurely along the 17-mile Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway; ATV trail riding on the Sandstone Multi-Use Trail; or ride your horse on the Caroline Dormon Horse Trail.
Cane Camp

Visitors to Cane Camp can a quiet and peaceful setting under the shade of large pine trees carpeted with green grass. This horse camp is located near the Sandstone Multiple-Use Trail and can be a riders camping point to utilize the Caroline Dormon Trail.
A Primitive camp inside the National Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve. This camp is available for horse and general camping. No ATV camping allowed.

Facilities: General camping, water available, flush toilets, and horse feeding tie poles. This camp is a designated fee area.

Directions: From the intersection of I-49 and Highway 6 (Natchitoches), drive west on Hwy 6 for 4 miles. Turn left (south) on Louisiana Hwy 117 and proceed 16 miles to Forest Highway 59, Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway. Turn left (east) on FH 59 and go 4.1 miles to the camp, a signed location on the left (north)

Coyote Camp

Visitors to Coyote Camp can enjoy an out-of-the-way camping area within the Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve. Although this camp is a designated hunter's camp, it can be utilized year around by general forest visitors. Very primitive site with limited facilities.

Facilities: General camping, no water available, vault toilets. This camp has a scenic overlook viewing the I-49 corridor off in the distance.

Directions: From the intersection of I-49 and Highway 6 (Natchitoches), drive west on Hwy 6 for 4 miles. Turn left (south) on Louisiana Hwy 117 and proceed 16 miles to Forest Highway 59, Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway. Turn left (east) on FH 59 and go 9.5 miles to Forest Road K18E. Turn left (north) on K18E and go 0.3 mile to the camp.

Custis Camp

Visitors to Custis Camp can enjoy an out-of-the-way camping area within the Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve. Although this camp is a designated hunter's camp, it can be utilized year around by general forest visitors. Very primitive site with limited facilities.

Facilities: General camping, no water available, vault toilets, and the availability of horse feed poles.

Directions: From the intersection of I-49 and Highway 6 (Natchitoches), drive west on Hwy 6 for 4 miles. Turn left (south) on Louisiana Hwy 117 and proceed 16 miles to Forest Highway 59, Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway. Turn left (east) on FH 59 and go 2.4 miles to FR 341. Turn left (north-west) on FR 341 and go 0.6 mile to the camp.

Oak Camp

Visitors to Oak Camp can expect a primitive camp inside the National Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve. This camp is available for horse and general camping. No ATV camping allowed. This camp is also a designated hunter's camp.

Facilities: General camping, no water available, vault toilets, and trash receptacles.

Directions: From the intersection of I-49 and Highway 6 (Natchitoches), drive west on Hwy 6 for 4 miles. Turn left (south) on Louisiana Hwy 117 and proceed 16 miles to Forest Highway 59, Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway. Turn left (east) on FH 59 and go 8.7 miles to Forest Road 311. Turn left (north) on FR 311 and go 0.4 mile to the camp.


Caroline Dormon Trail: The Caroline Dormon Trail is designated for horse riders although hiking and biking is permitted. No motorized travel is allowed. The trail head for the Caroline Dormon Trail is on the Longleaf Scenic Byway, Forest Highway 59. Creek crossings, meadows, and scenic views are all available to visitors to the Dormon Trail.
