Alaska: Alaska Equine Rescue

Alaska Equine Rescue is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help starving, neglected and abused hooved animals in Alaska, especially horses. We try to prevent future instances of starvation and neglect through a network of education and teamwork.

Our History
A small group of concerned horse owners in Fairbanks, Alaska founded Alaska Equine Rescue (AER) in 1990 when they tried to help a group of emaciated, neglected horses, discovered quite by accident. Efforts to get help from local and state authorities were unsuccessful, in spite of media coverage, photos and footage of undeniably neglected horses.

Frustrated by their long and unsuccessful ordeal of trying to help 20-some animals in desperate need of help, these caring individuals officially formed Alaska Equine Rescue in late 1990 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, non-profit organization. AER is not membership-based, and is run by a board of directors.

The original founders of AER traveled around Alaska to major cities and held public meetings to introduce the new organization and invite support. The word spread, and in spite of many challenges, AER has grown and strengthened. AER's original Fairbanks organizers are no longer with us, but we are extremely grateful for their dedication and hard work during AER's formative, and sometimes most difficult years. Since then, AER has relocated its "headquarters" to Anchorage.

Many of the challenges that faced Alaska Equine Rescue in its early years still exist today. Although there is more awareness and cooperation from authorities compared to a decade ago, more is needed. Local and state laws are poorly written and worse yet, often times poorly enforced. The commercial use of horses is unregulated and these animals are frequently unprotected. The education of horse owners everywhere is an ongoing mission, and one with which we must do a better job.

In spite of the many challenges that animal welfare initiatives face all over Alaska, AER has received tremendous public support from the horse community and just plain animal lovers everywhere. We are very grateful to all of you who join us in promoting the humane and responsible care for Alaska's horses.

Alaska Equine Rescue (AER) is an IRS Recognized 501(c)(3) organization formed in 1990.
