Horse Rentals & Day Ride Trails Enjoy horseback riding on the District’s multi-use trail system. Ride your own horse or go on a guided tour from any of eight stables offering livery service. Horse registration and/or riders license required. Please take note of our Trail Rules before your visit.

Rider’s License

The Ordinance of Forest Preserve Requires:

All Horseback Riders on Forest Preserve District trails must obtain and have in their possession a Rider’s License issued by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.All horses either privately owned or rented, when ridden on Forest Preserve District bridle trails must be Licensed. Said license tag to be affixed to the left hand side of the bridle.

Horseback Riding Rules

If you enjoy horseback riding and you aspire to be a good horseman, we ask you to observe the following:

  1. Walk horses between stable and trail.
  2. Be courteous and considerate.
  3. Slow to a walk or slow trot on meeting other riders, hikers, or bicyclists.
  4. Do not race horses — keep horses always under control.
  5. Stallions not permitted on trails.
  6. Be humane and kind to your horse.
  7. ONLY PERMITTED GAITS are walk, trot, or slow canter.
  8. STAY ON ESTABLISHED TRAIL — keep to the right.

Failure to obey could result in revocation of license.


Multi-Use Trail Rules

  1. Bicyclists and equestrians must stay on the designated trail. No off-trail riding.
  2. Be courteous to other trail users. Bicyclists yield to hikers and equestrians. Hikers yield to equestrians. Give notice before passing other trail users.
  3. Do not ride on unpaved trails when the trail is muddy.
  4. Motor vehicles prohibited.
  5. Recreational use only. No speed training. (8 mph maximum speed)
  6. All trails are two-way. Stay in your lane. Give notice before passing other trail users.
  7. Don’t litter. Please pack out more than you pack in.
  8. For rider’s safety, helmets are suggested.
